Supplier Sit Down – Gemma’s Cakes Castledawson

Supplier Sit Down – Gemma’s Cakes Castledawson

This week we are sitting down with the incredibly talented Gemma from Gemma’s Cakes Castledawson. Gemma and her husband John started their business 5 years ago and their success story is remarkable! Currently they are Galgorm Resort’s preferred cake supplier and the Wedding Journal’s Cake Designer of the year…not bad for a couple who started their business by making their daughter’s birthday cake!   So let’s get to know Gemma a little better… How did you get started making wedding cakes? It all started when I made my daughter Olivia’s 4th birthday cake.  I was looking for a ballet themed cake and couldn’t find one so I decided to give it a go myself!  The cake was a huge hit at the party and I went on to make a few other cakes for friends & family.  A short time later I started a Facebook page and overnight I had a business! Olivia is now 9 and loves that she helped start the business!  Over the years the business has progressed to focus on wedding cakes.   What’s your favourite part about your job? I love being creative, meeting new people and being my own boss. It’s so satisfying when a bride & groom contact me to say they loved their cake and that it was a talking point with their guests!    You work a long side your husband, what’s the best parts and the worst? John and I get on really well most of the time, we enjoy each other’s company and keep each other motivated!! I’m sure it’s not for everyone but it works for us!  It also...

Supplier Sit Down – Ryan & Patrick Design

Supplier Sit Down – Ryan & Patrick Design

Ready for another installment of Supplier Sit down? This week we welcome “Ryan Patrick Design” to our blog (p.s they are one of the nicest suppliers we’ve had the opportunity to work with so far!) Tell us a little about yourself & your business… Myself and my partner Patrick (now husband :-)) started our business a few years ago. We both had a real passion for design, art, and loved making things! Patrick’s strengths lay in the digital side whereas I found I loved all things “make and do”! (I was an avid childhood Art Attack fan!) I was creating cards and invites as a hobby but once I met Patrick we knew this could be made into something a bit special! And Ryan Patrick Design was born, or RP Design for short! We set out with a clear goal of creating affordable gorgeous stationery that would turn heads. Something that would get people excited about attending the couples wedding. We wanted to be budget friendly, but don’t get me wrong we have created invites spanning from a couple of pounds to a lot lot higher, but we really believe its up to each couple what they want to spend!   We know all too often that people think weddings, and think start adding zeros, we don’t work like that, we work backwards, you tell us what you want to spend and we will design to suit that, always making us great value for money. We also both come from customer service backgrounds and its extremely important to us, we hate faceless impersonal transactions, at the end of the day people are spending...

Wedding Planning Tips

Wedding Planning Tips

Here’s our top 3 recommendations for any bride or groom planning a wedding in Northern Ireland… Get Organised Whether you’re a pen and paper kind of gal or an excel spreadsheet fiend you’ll need a way to keep track of deposits, appointments and guests (any excuse to shop for stationary is OK in our book). Your options are endless from actual Wedding Planners like this one on Amazon to the age old Filofax, which you could customize to suit yourself (Etsy has some fab dividers and stickers, if you want to spice up your planner). If you’re looking to go all out and have a one of a kind planner you might want to consider an Erin Condren planner (the company is based in America but they do ship internationally to the UK) it is a pricey alternative but did you see the rose gold option 😯 ? Monthly spreads as well as separate tabs for cake, venue, flowers, etc. will help to ensure everything is kept in the right place making your planning much easier from the word go. If you’re good with excel and already have it on your computer or laptop this is probably the most budget friendly approach. It’ll also be easier to edit (when budgets are altered and guest lists are changed) and more efficient to work with due to the formulas you can input to calculate totals and percentages. There’s loads of help out there on the World Wide Web for any Microsoft Excel queries you might have so even as a beginner you’ll be fine. As always with anything computer related always keep a...

Supplier Sit Down (Barbara McKeown-Howe)

Welcome to our second installment of Supplier Sit Down, where we have a chat with the best wedding suppliers Northern Ireland has to offer. This week it is the fabulous Barbara McKeown-Howe’s turn – Fairy Tales Wedding & Event Specialists. Tell us a little about yourself & your business… Amazingly after 13 years in business I still adore what I do but at the start of every year I  am petrified about how were going to get there! lol… but we always do! I have an amazing team who also adore what they do. What are your top 3 tips? 1. Pen & Paper Put a pen and paper beside your bed, all the best ideas usually come in the middle of the night then you spend the next few hours going over and over them in your head and then realize you’ve forgotten your ideas by morning time. 2. Have Perspective  Your Wedding is the biggest and most important thing going on in your life but it isn’t in everyone else’s. So don’t go crazy if your bridesmaids can’t take a full week off work to go with you for hair trials.   3. Think like a guest   When planning your big day imagine being a guest at your own wedding. Keeping in mind what you would want to see, hear & feel as a guest is a great way to plan a super day. Are there any trends that couples should be paying attention to for 2017? To be honest it really is about the style of the couple, some like things a little more traditional, some a little more lavish. But everyone just...

What are your top 3 FAQ’s? 1. How soon in advance do I need to organize my wedding flowers? I would advice between 6/12 months, however I have clients who book at least 18/24 months in advance, Fridays and Saturdays are always very popular so it’s good to book well in advance. 2. I have 200 guests how big a wedding cake do I need ? Well you will need at least 5 tiers and I would suggest you bottom base is at least 12/14 inches.
